The Computer College at Shell Point

Spring 2009

McLab

New Admission Procedures

To be conducted by the Computer College Steering Committee (CCSC)

For 5 terms the CCSC has provided randomization of the names of all the residents who have registered for classes in which the number exceeds the maximum number that can be accommodated. Thus, any resident who registers during 3 working days from the start of registration will have an equal chance of being enrolled. (It is not necessary to attempt to register very early on the first day.)

New this term will be “Class Balancing”. Long waitlists have been virtually eliminated by offering additional sections for the classes with large registration. In some cases, those who were not included after randomization, were not able to attend the second section at the time it was being offered. For two days following randomization, an attempt will be made to “balance” the two sections of the class. You may be contacted to see if you could attend the second section at the new time. This will provide the best opportunity to meet the needs of the residents.

EXPLANATION OF CURRICULUM

To assist you in selecting a class suited to you, the level of difficulty for each of the

courses offered is listed below.

Level 0 is the most basic computer course, and is designed for those who have never used a computer.

Level 1 requires little or no computer experience.

Level 2 is somewhat more difficult and persons taking these courses should have completed the Level 1 course or have equivalent experience.

Level 3 is a more advanced and complex course and requires that the student have significant experience or has completed a Level 2 course without experiencing any significant problems.

Students should not take the next level course until they have satisfactorily completed the current level course. If it has been several terms since you have taken a course and don’t feel confident, it is recommended that you repeat a course before going on to the next level. However, equivalent experience is an important factor. Our experience has shown that students without the proper computer background for that level class have great difficulty and show signs of frustration.

The Computer College offers the courses in either XP or Vista for Level 1 and Level 2 of Computer Basics. It is not necessary to have Vista on your computer to take the Vista class. Most of the class work can be done on XP or Vista. However, by taking a class now using Vista, you will be better prepared when you purchase a computer with Vista.

Categories

The courses in the Computer College are grouped in the following categories:

Word Processing

NEW THIS TERM – ONE & TWO SESSION WORKSHOPS

Workshops were offered for the first time the past term, Fall 2008. From your enthusiastic response, this format obviously met the need. In some cases the instructors found it difficult to cover some subjects in one session so this term there will also be a number of two session workshops. It was necessary to use the labs in addition to McLab so note carefully where the workshops are being held.

The purpose of the Workshops is to provide additional information and techniques for those who would like to know more about specific subjects or fine tune your skills.  You may have taken a class some time ago and covered the subject but would like a refresher. Perhaps you might be interested in a new program or Operating System like Vista or the programs in Office 2007 and take an overview course just to see what is involved.  All the workshops are listed as Level 2 courses and are not designed to learn how to use a computer. It is strongly recommended that you take basic courses before taking a workshop course. As before, regular computer courses cover one or more subjects that can’t readily be taught in a workshop.

All One Session Workshops will be designated as CC001 (A-G). The Two Session Workshops will be listed as CC002 (A-H). You may register for one or more workshops. Every attempt has been made to avoid a time conflict with a regular class you may wish to take.

In addition to the changes above, the Computer College Steering Committee (CCSC) is continuing to study all aspects of the Computer College with the goal of making your participation a great experience.

Building a personal web site can be very rewarding. It is like having a permanent greeting card available to all your friends and relatives, but better than a greeting card. It is dynamic in that you can change as you please any time you want. You can post photographs and memoirs as they are available.

We will use www.angelfire.com an internet site that allows anyone to build free web sites.   In this course we will use angelfire's basic building tool to build your site. No special programming will be necessary. Angelfire allows both text and graphics on their web pages and you can link to other web sites with ease. So you are only limited by your imagination.

This course is not for beginners. It will be taught as a semi-virtual classroom course.
